I've been so intrigued by fur and hair lately. The vessel has now become furry lil creature-esque objects.

Some to be nuzzled together and others to "stand" on their own.

First! I finally had time last week to sit for a few days and work on my new website.

I've been trying out silica sand. I love the sugar quality. This is just the beginning. I think I'm going to slow down on the massive sculptural peices and work primarly on function. I felt like I needed to get this urge to "remove function" out for a bit and now I'm ready to get back to making pots!

Sand is just another texture. Something to grasp on to. Literally. :)

The vessel’s purpose is to contain. We use the vessel to hold our mundane collection of things; our clutter. Throwing our car keys into a dish when we get home, saving our pocket change in a jar or gathering all of the pens and keeping them in that one tall cup. These rituals in one’s life are what I’m investigating. What if the vessel is already full? Can one still contain?
My work is an exploration of accumulation and the vessel that surrounds it. In a blink of an eye clutter can easily multiply and overpower its home. The vessel deforms to accommodate the clutters needs; bending, twisting, trying to conform for its contents. It becomes a struggle for control. A struggle to contain the chaos of one’s assortment of inadequate objects that is gathered in life. Does the vessel ever succeed in this struggle? We always seem to be in need of another container.

Its called "To Flatter:"

It was held in the gallery at our University. Its called the "back room" gallery. Its called this because it is located right off the main gallery space.

I was super excited to show my work in this space because in the "main" gallery space was a Ceramics show by Erin Furimsky.

I love her work and admire her!

I feel so lucky and honored to show in a space even NEAR her work.

It makes me that much more aware that THIS is what I want to do with the rest of my life...to be an artist.....to make for myself and to just be happy.

Senior Show Progress.

My work has completely changed from what I was doing in Aug.

Why did my work change? It changed because my life changed completely and because of that the way I looked at my work changed. I became less uptight and proper. I "jumped off the cliff" and let myself go. Caring too much can hinder ones thought process.

I've already had my senior show. It was pretty successful. I received alot of great feedback from many people.

Here are a few shots of the peices in progress. (green and bisque)

I've completely let symmetry go and focused on the movement of the clay in my hands whilst throwing. The "puff" forms are inhabiting the vessels and function is no longer available.

I went to a quick 5 day trip to the East coast to see the family and HAD to get away and see some art in NY.

I went to The Museum of Art and Design(MAD) and absolutely loved it. They have some throwback pottery from Rudy Audio, Betty Woodman.

They have an exhibit up now called "Object Factory: The Art of Industrial Ceramics".

My background is hand thrown pottery and to see all slip casted pots with decals/luster and alternative materials made my heart skip a beat.

Everything that I thought I knew went out the 5th story window.

Only sad part was....NO photography. I couldnt take photos of anything. U_U

I had an idea .....at 4 in the am one night/morning. I had to jump out of bed and draw, draw, draw my ideas out of my head so I could be able to sleep. My thoughts were of a "Functional Ecosystem" ....(thanks Bio class) Quirky fuctional ware amist a world of their own.

Or something like that.

So here is the first proto-type.

I have finally been able to make some more "functional" stuff.

Hopefully they will be glazed for some shows in Aug. HA....we'll see.

I'm doing major glaze testing for cone 6. I havent messed with mid range for a few years but Im giving it a fighting chance. I think that with what I know now about firing..glazing w/ cone 10 redux I can apply it towards cone 6 (kinda) and have better success.

Now I can play with colored slips. Yay!

Lorna Meaden

Her work made me wonder about soda atmosphere during firings as well as working with a lighter clay body and leaving some clay unglazed. I love the workability of stoneware but wanted something lighter to kick up the color.

His work really got my gears going about texture and functional wear.

Glazing doesnt have to be so damn complicated (although she probably takes awhile to glaze these guys...but they look effortless!) I love glazing and I found myself not wanting to glaze because of how long it took me. Everyone would glaze with ease while I took 3 days to glaze. Her polka dots also inspired me to experiment with my own dots. Best thing ever.

Rites of Passage

I got into my first National Show!

I am extremely stoked.

The show that I got into is called Rites Of Passage.

It is a undergrad/recent graduate show.

These are the stats:

Out of 731 works reviewed, a pool of semi-finalist works included a list of 100. They narrowed this pool down to 26 works by 14 artists from 12 schools in 9 different states for the final selection.

The show is in Ohio.

I am so honored to be chosen.

K.C Coalition

My work was accepted into a undergrad regional show at the Kansas City Artist Coalition.

I recently went to the opening and the work was really nice. The 2-d work was especially nice.

The juror was Stacy Switzer the director of Grand Arts here in KC. She picked out some nice pieces. The show was very mysterious and edgy.

My jar is on the left. It is angled weird. I wish I could of moved it even an inch to the right. Plus my lid is on crocked. BUT it looked great behind the glass box. My jar and the bottle to the right were the only functional ceramics there.
