NY state of mind

I went to a quick 5 day trip to the East coast to see the family and HAD to get away and see some art in NY.
I went to The Museum of Art and Design(MAD) and absolutely loved it. They have some throwback pottery from Rudy Audio, Betty Woodman.
They have an exhibit up now called "Object Factory: The Art of Industrial Ceramics".
My background is hand thrown pottery and to see all slip casted pots with decals/luster and alternative materials made my heart skip a beat.
Everything that I thought I knew went out the 5th story window.
Only sad part was....NO photography. I couldnt take photos of anything. U_U
All I have is this webpage.
Take a look!

This is my first (offical) start of my cone 6 journey.
The soft palette is growing on me.

Working through some more

Slips are on and bowls are in place.
Finished slip detail. My poor fingers hurt from slip trailing.
POLKA DOTS.

Next up is my cup "ecosystem" try out.
This is just me working out ideas that were in my head.

Working through

I had an idea .....at 4 in the am one night/morning. I had to jump out of bed and draw, draw, draw my ideas out of my head so I could be able to sleep. My thoughts were of a "Functional Ecosystem" ....(thanks Bio class) Quirky fuctional ware amist a world of their own.
Or something like that.
So here is the first proto-type.
Two bowls are sitting on their hill.
I've been inspired by Rebekah Bogard's mystical world of fantasy creatures and plants.

I've also been working on some cone 06 glaze testing.

Making

I have finally been able to make some more "functional" stuff.

Hopefully they will be glazed for some shows in Aug. HA....we'll see.

I'm doing major glaze testing for cone 6. I havent messed with mid range for a few years but Im giving it a fighting chance. I think that with what I know now about firing..glazing w/ cone 10 redux I can apply it towards cone 6 (kinda) and have better success.

Now I can play with colored slips. Yay!

Current Utilitarian Influences (with one exception)

I am influenced by so many things around and me and this is just a tid bit of what goes through my brain. I'll post more once I process the rest.

Lorna Meaden

Her work made me wonder about soda atmosphere during firings as well as working with a lighter clay body and leaving some clay unglazed. I love the workability of stoneware but wanted something lighter to kick up the color.

Rob Sutherland

His work really got my gears going about texture and functional wear.

Meredith Host

Glazing doesnt have to be so damn complicated (although she probably takes awhile to glaze these guys...but they look effortless!) I love glazing and I found myself not wanting to glaze because of how long it took me. Everyone would glaze with ease while I took 3 days to glaze. Her polka dots also inspired me to experiment with my own dots. Best thing ever.

Kristen Kieffer

One Word: Craftsmanship

Ryan Greenheck

I've always been a "bowl" kind of person, not a cylinder. I love forms with volume and tension.

Julia GallowayWhat doesnt inspire me when I see her work?

Last but not least Virgina Scotchie

I have a battle between sculptural and functional going on in my head. Her work is helping me through it.
